Poetry Is Dead!

Welcome to my Author Blog! Photobucket Photobucket

Poetry is dead! I heard it through the grapevine.
It lay there like a corpse packed in formaldehyde
 They tried to resurrect it but there was a flat line
 Oh, I cried the day they announced poetry had died!

 In this age of Facebook and chat acronyms
 Kids don't need to read or spell the lingo;
 Instead of Keats, they use computer memes,
 Leaving little time for Shakespeare or Poe.

Oh, where is the phoenix of legend and lore?
 With healing tears of strength and immortality?
We need its antidote to heal the metaphor
And its power to resurrect the hyperbole.

Is there no literary physician here?
 Is there no supernatural power? We need a miracle,
 To bring back Whitman, Poe and Shakespeare?
 Kids need Ovid, Virgil and sophocles.

 Wait....what is that crawling out of the sepulchre?
Out of the ashes rises this old form of literature!

 Author Note: They say Poetry is dead; that it was replaced by prose and modern technological advances like the E-reader, the internet and the use of internet memes and lingo. But like fashion, everything that's old has a way of renewing itself. There is still life in poetry's bones! © Mary Aris. All rights reserved

New Poem

Welcome to my Author Blog! Photobucket Photobucket I've written about thirty new poems since the start of the year. I've been suffering from Writer's Block for awhile now. Keeping a Journal has helped tame my Writer's block.  I find that writing an entry a day for fifteen minutes helps me to open my subconscious to new ideas.   Here's one of my new poems:

Writer

Wordsmith, you who conjure language into
Readable masterpieces for the sake of knowledge and pleasure that
Inspire mankind with your colourful imagination; you that with flying fingers
Type and conquer the blank canvas of an empty page,
Entertain us with the magic of your craft; your
Readers will whisper your name across the annals of time.

The Solace of Madness

Welcome to my Author Blog!

PhotobucketPhotobucket

I am the grave robber who in the night
 Rummage through your feeble, frantic mind.
 Black fingers ripping cells with all its might,
 As you lay there like a zombie, dumb and blind.

 I am the thief that robs your pleasant dreams;
The frequent nightmare sifting through your brain.
With a sharp razor I'll shred your mind at the seams;
I'm the monster that chases you down the lane.

In agony your wretched soul does writhe
I seduce you and torture you all night.
You shiver as your manic mind I seize;
You will rage in agony; there's no respite.

 A zombie, you will walk through eternity
 Like the Jack-O-lantern with just a lump of coal--
 Your sole solace through the darnkness of insanity;
 Your mere solace for your sore, weary soul.

 You are my prisoner; I'm your destiny...
 From now on your mind is my property.

Deep in the ground, my heart has fallen
Wretched sprite, I’ve forsaken love’s calling
Cast down into this god-damned dismal abyss
Bereft and stripped of all happiness.

In shame I am bound to walk this earth forever
Damned eternally to be Satan’s lover
 Cast aside by heaven; a vile demon;
No longer deemed worthy of God’s heaven.

Here I lie in the piteous pit of Hades
Surrounded by Satan’s angels with sharpened blades
Serenaded by ravens flying above my head
Singing praises a nd requiems to the dead.

While Saints and angels above soar
I lie in perdition, Satan's whore.

My Polaris

Welcome to my Author Blog!

As the sun rises upon the east
So does my soul lifts up its weary head
And dances jovially upon my breast.
When you are near; my bad moods are lifted.

Your eyes are like beacons, guiding my path
As I travel through life’s uncharted journey.
Your smile is my infallible compass
As I set sail across this vast, strange sea.

The sun slowly sets on the horizon.
I set my soul for a quiet slumber.
As I settle down when the day is done
I see your reflections of russet amber..

I feel your soft breeze gently kiss my flesh
Leaving a scent of beach, so clean and fresh.

In Memorium We Honour those Whose blood was Shed - The Golden Pen

They were young servicemen of twenty-two
And on their suits they wore Red Badges of Courage….
Young men and women who gave their souls for glory
In the name of freedom; in the name of victory.

They spilled their guts over Germany
And in the havoc of the Vietnam War
They risked their lives in Afghanistan and Tripoli
And Death came knocking upon their door.

Today we honour such heroic deeds of valour
Though they are long gone, they will not be forgotten
As long as our flag waves over a country of Democracy
Their names will shine in splendor–
In Memoriam we honor our valiant servicemen
In our hearts there is a white carnation and poppey.
That will never fade.
We will gaze up to the heavens
and see their faces amongst the constellations
In Memoriam we honour Our valient Vetrans.

A Poet's Heart

Welcome to my Author Blog! Photobucket Photobucket http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7330888481130710086#editor/target=post;postID=9131948889328437893

My hand glides across an empty canvass
Dripping in scarlet hues, my pen smoothly gildes
Filling the empty spaces and crevices
With words from where inspiration abides.

My heart, like a somnambulist lies
In dreams, trapped within the muse's lair
In lucid revaries, its spirit flies
Like a bird gliding through the air.

I hear the steady rhythm of my heart
Dancing to the tune of a forgotten nymph
Entranced by the beat I take part
In the dance of creativity and triumph.

I write as  inspiration takes the lead.....
My masterpiece I hope young and old will read.

Autumn

Of all the seasons
I love autumn most of all...
The lovely essence of serenity...
Of watching nature's tale retold
By a lady dressed in gold;

I love to sit back and absorb
The splendor of the autumn dawn
And watch the beauty of October's sun
Cast deep shadows on the lawn.

Autumn gives off splendor
Fall leaves collapse on the ground
In shades of red, amber and crimson brown...
A kaleidoscope of brilliant colours---
Of multi-pattern hues.

Amidst the mums, pumpkins and gourds sits autumn’s queen
Reminiscing of her lost innocence,
Upon her throne of evergreens
Weaving a tapestry of reveries of younger days gone by!
When autumn’s beauty gives way to winter...

Autumn's beauty does fade and wither
Yet life goes on beyond the grave...
For even in the icy grip of death
Lies beauty and rebirth!

Perpetual Bliss

The night was an empty velvet canvas--
The moon, a budding artist in Gay Paris.
He painted a sheer line for some emphasis
With a few brushstrokes of his palette;

And dotted the blue midnight fabric
With a series of streak-like diamonds
Shining ever so brightly and mystique
Over shimmering , moonlit oceans;

Where the horizon melds with ocean
Upon such a romantic ambiance
Under a shining star in heaven
Two lovers came in Unison,
Caught in a web of sexy, sheer romance;

Pearls of sweat bathed our bodies
On that sensual Eve as we embraced
Merging as two colliding galaxies;
Beating in a crescendo, our hearts raced.

Our scent mingled with the essence
Of the salty, ocean breeze
speechless with the Evening's evanescence;
Begging this night will never cease;

The waves danced upon the ocean
Like sexy, sheer organza;
Likewise our bodies swayed on the horizon
Like silk, in a ballet extravaganza;

Mute by your beauty and sexiness
I am overwhelmed by your silken skin.
Sequestered by your dulcet essence,
My senses fail me as I hold your hand.

Lost forever in a sensuous kiss,
Our hearts entangled by this web of passion.
Ravished by this night of perpetual bliss;
Hoping this night won't fade into oblivion.

The Art of Poetry

The Art of Poetry

Poetry is a form of literary art which uses language in an artistic and eye-catching form. The earliest poem in existence is the Epic of Gilgamesh, which was published in ancient Mesopotamia, and was written around the third Millennium Before Christ. The Epic of Gilgamesh is a piece of literary art that tells the story of the Mesopotamian hero, Gilgamesh and his relationship with a friend. The bible is full of poetry. The Book of Psalms is a collection of poems and hymns in praise of God written by the biblical King David. The Greeks, too, have their own epic poems. The Odyssey, written by the ancient Greek poet, Homer, (Not Homer Simpson) but the legendary Greek poet, depicts the life of Odysseus. This epic poem was written in the 8th century. Homer's first epic poem is the Iliad, a story about the final years of the siege of Troy and depicts the story of Achilles, the mighty Greek warrior and his fury towards the King Mycenae. The Greek philosopher, Aristotle wrote Poetics to depict his views about poetry. In his work he mentions three types of poetic genres or types.....Comedy, drama, and the tragedy.

The use of poetic devises or styles such as assonance, personification, simile, metaphor, rhythm, alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhyme help shape poems, and emphasize emotions and also increasing the poem's literal meaning.

Let's look at certain elements or composition of a poem:

Rhythm:

Rhythm is a dancer so the song goes. What gives the poem momentum is the element of rhythm. Rhythm is the way each line in a poem resonates the words within a set language in a sing-song pattern. Some call this pattern metre. Rhythm is how the lines within a poem flow. This resonance is set by patterns of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of verse. The most notorious metre is the iambic pentameter made famous by William Shakespeare. The Iamb is a set of five unstressed and stressed syllables in a line of verse. The sets of syllables within a line of poetry are called feet. Incidentally it is said that the English languish is naturally spoken in iambic pentameter.

Example:

1 2 3 4 5

´ ˘ / ´ ˘ / ´ ˘ / ´ ˘ / ´ ˘

Five sets of iambs (one unstressed followed by one stressed syllable within a line of verse.

The poem would sound something like this:

Da-DUM/ da-DUM/ da-DUM/ da-DUM/ da-DUM

Rhyme:

Rhyme is the element in poetry where the repetition of different words using similar-sounding words are used within a poem particularly end-words within a stanza of poetry. A couplet is a short two line stanza of rhymed end words. This form of rhyme exists within the Sonnet.

Now, my dear...I bid you a sad goodbye.
I bet you never knew that a rose could fly.

Rhyme scheme is the pattern of end-rhymes within a poem.

ABAB CDCD EFEF GG is the typical rhyme-scheme of the Shakespearean sonnet, a traditional fourteen line poem written in iambic pentameter.

Alliteration:

Alliteration is the element of poetry is a repetition of the first words within a line of poetry:

Example:

Little Lila Lou, sang a silly song today.

Example:

By the babbling brook in yonder field

I spied my love lavishly lusting after me;

Under the swanky Swansea sycamore tree concealed,

Earnestly yearning each other voraciously

From Under the Swanky Swansea Sycamore Tree

By Mary Aris ©2008

Simile:

Simile is an element of poetry that makes an analogy between two unlike things with the use of the word like.

Her hair was like the silk of the Orient,

Luxuriously smooth and black like the velvet y cloak of night.

Like an angel she was heaven scent

To make the darkest days merry and bright;

Metaphor:

The Metaphor, like the Simile is an analogy of two different things except that it does not use the word like.

Example:

Her eyes, two shining stars twinkling in space.....

Two sapphires adorning the beauty of her face;

Here we are comparing a lady's eyes with stars twinkling in the heavens, and two Sapphires enhancing the lady's face.

Personification:

Personification is the element of poetry that personifies an inanimate object and makes it life-like.

Example:

The sun danced upon the heavens on that day,

The moon played the violin,

The sky sang in harmony

Delighted All of Nature joined right in.

Assonance:

Assonance is the element of poetry that repeats vowel sounds in order to make internal rhymes.

Example:

Listen to My Kitten meowing merrily

Consonance:

Consonance is the repetition of consonants between words within a line of poetry:

Example:

Pitter, patter

The mammals all clapped in unison.

Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is the element in poetry where words imitate the sound they depict.

Example:

The bee buzzed; the glasses clinked.

Meow, went the cat.
